200 proofs that the Earth is a spinning ball- numbers 6 and 7

200 reasons the world is round: Number 6 and 7

6)If Earth were a ball 25,000 miles in circumference as NASA and modern astronomy claim, spherical trigonometry dictates the surface of all standing water must curve downward an easily measurable 8 inches per mile multiplied by the square of the distance. This means along a 6 mile channel of standing water, the Earth would dip 6 feet on either end from the central peak. Every time such experiments have been conducted, however, standing water has proven to be perfectly level.

I have a strange feeling of déjà vu with this one…
Again, this reason revolves around water not curving. I have previously discussed this, and shown that water can, and does curve when it is subjected to the force of gravity, and this can also be demonstrated relatively easily. So…. I’m skipping this one. Sorry.

7) Surveyors, engineers and architects are never required to factor the supposed curvature of the Earth into their projects. Canals, railways, bridges and tunnels for example are always cut and laid horizontally, often over hundreds of miles without any allowance for curvature.

OK, so this one is interesting. And the answer is pleasingly simple. In big, long engineering projects, it is! There are bridges where the supports at each end actually bend away from each other, even though they are still perpendicular to the Earth (http://mathscinotes.com/2017/01/effect-of-earths-curvature-on-suspension-bridge-dimensions/). That being said, the alteration required is really quite small. Interestingly, (according to someone on quora anyway), snipers also have to factor in the rotation and curvature of the Earth when taking shots.
So, simply, surveyors, engineers and architects do take the curvature of the Earth into account when building long structures, however for most structures the difference caused by the curvature of the Earth is insignificant compared to the local changes, hills etc. of the site where the building is being planned.
